If you haven’t switched to electronic prescribing (e-Prescribing), here are key things you need to know.

It’s the law for controlled substances.

Texas law now requires all prescriptions for controlled substances be prepared and sent to the pharmacy electronically. The law that went into effect Jan. 1 prohibits pharmacies from accepting paper and phone prescriptions for narcotics unless an exception applies or a waiver is granted.

Many doctors don’t know that getting certified to e-Prescribe controlled substances takes additional time. Even if you only prescribe a handful of narcotics a year, you still have to go through a registration and certification process that can take around 10 days to complete. The Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA), the National Plan and Provider Enumeration System (NPPES) and the Texas State Board of Dental Examiners have specific criteria for e-Prescribing controlled substances.

It’s easy.

Special software provides the doctor, or a staff member, quick searches for drug and dosing information, single-click access to the TX PMP AWARxE and convenient integration with most practice management systems. The doctor’s final step is to review the prescription and sign and send it directly to the pharmacy using any desktop computer, laptop, tablet or phone.

It works for all medications.

Any prescription—from antibiotics to anti-fungals to pain management meds (narcotics)—can be e-Prescribed. Since it reduces steps in your daily workflow, why not go all in and e-Prescribe every medication?

Getting set up to e-Prescribe non-opioids is fast and easy. You’ll be able to e-Prescribe non-opioid medications while completing the Electronic Prescriptions for Controlled Substances (EPCS) process. Once you complete your certification, you’re good to e-Prescribe narcotics in addition to other medications.

Don’t delay in getting set up to e-Prescribe. You may be pleasantly surprised by the extra time you get back in your day with this one change to your business flow.
